Emily au Canada - Journal 2

Dear journal, June 20th

Today was amazing! I'm staying in Yellowknife at the Red Coach Inn on 50th Avenue, in the old town. Tomorrow I'm staying at the floatplane dock for the Midnight Sun Floatplane Fly In. I just came in from a lovely walk down Ragged Ass Road. (No, I'm not kidding!) It means 'dirt poor'. It has some history to it too. I'll tell you. There were three miners that built shacks in the old town because they were just plain dirt poor! The shacks were the size of sheds!! Later on, after they built the shacks, they decided to call the little road, Ragged Ass Road for fun and because they were that themselves! Now they don't put a street sign up that actually says Ragged Ass Road because people stole them too many times. In fact I just bought one from the Gallery Of The Midnight Sun. (It's not really a gallery, just a gift ship.) I also bought some flaked gold and beautiful dream catchers with pretty pink beads. Then I left for dinner, which was eaten at the Red Apple Chinese restaurant on Franklin Avenue. Tomorrow I plan to have breakfast at the Wild Cat Cafe. On my way here from Alberta, I saw this beautiful landscape. I flew in a floatplane over two moose and a herd of Musk Ox in the Tundra. It was about a day's flight from Edmonton. It was pretty smooth sailingfor most of the trip. (Except when we hit a thunder and lightning storm, so we had to land on Watta Lake, where I camped over night with my two friends Hailey and Ben.) The lightning stroms were causing fires everywhere. First, we set up camp in a little island, and then Ben collected firewood and made a fire, while Hailey and I unpacked our things and put them in the tent.We hid our food in a shed that was made of wood right in our campground. Then we all went fishing and caught 4 lake trout and 3 pike. Then we cooked them over the fire for dinner. Boy, out on the water, those mosquitos were BAD! I said Yellowknife was the "mosquito capital of the world", and I hadn't even arrived yet! Anyway, right now I'm planing to hit the sack. It's around 9:56 and I'm pooped, because Hailey, Ben and I left at 5:39 in the morning.(And I am NOT a morning person!!!) I also just phoned my friend Plessa, who is Campbell River at the moment. She was exited to hear all the latest news; see ya tomorrow!
P.S Tomorrow I'm going to meet a local charecter, Buffalo Joe and his dog, Sophie.
P.P.S The northern lights are gorgeous!
